Welcome everyone! I am emsoftball9 or Emily - you may call me either one of those - and I’m totally psyched to be teaching the Scenery Class! As you have read, this class is about learning 4 of the 5 most important things in a scenery. We are taking out Poses, because that’s advanced and right now Ruby School is getting down on the basics. That leaves us with the Background, Scene, Fashion/Outfit, and Concept.
There is some clarification that needs to happen when discussing these 4 elements. Some people assume the background is the scene. WRONG. The scene consists of the background meaning the background is part of the scene, but the background is not just the scene and vice versa. So below there is each of the four elements and what they are in the scenery.
Scene – the setting; who, what (what’s going on and the items there), when and where. Example: (using the nighttime beach scenery background) Bunch of people, party & sodas, snacks and pizzas, in the evening (certain times can apply), at the beach. The scene is what you see when you look at the scenery.
Background – what is in the background of the scenery. Example: the sun is setting on the ocean that lies against the sandy beach. It’s almost, not quite, but almost like the set in a movie.
Concept – Does everything make sense? This means does everything fit? Not just putting random items in to fill up the space. Example: don’t put a dinosaur swimming in the ocean. In some cases, you have to put items in to RESEMBLE other things. In that case, it’s fine. So if the dinosaur is (and never use this because it still won’t make sense) resembling a shark, then it’s like ‘Okay, it’s just there to resemble a shark’. But for things to resemble well, they have to be in close relation. The quote I just said probably wouldn’t ever happen because if you see a dinosaur in an ocean, you’re not going to think right away, “Oh, it’s supposed to be a shark,” but more like, “What the heck is a dinosaur doin’ in an ocean!?” I like to think of it as why are you creating this scenery? What is the point
Fashion/Outfit – This is an obvious one. What’s the fashion/what are people wearing in this scenery. This can categorize under Concept because it has to make sense. If you go to a beach/beach party, you’ll NORMALLY see people wearing their swimming suit, Hawaiian shirt, sandals/flip-flops, and if it’s a party, maybe some summer dresses. It’s what would normally be seen. The reason it can categorize under Concept is because, it has to make sense what people are wearing or showcasing. (Showcasing as in if you’re in Paris and you look inside a store’s window, you probably aren’t going to find old jeans paired with a stained top)
Okay, now onto the assignment portion. Because it’s summer break (at least here in the US) I would like you to create a scenery based of Summer. This is a little less structured because I’m not telling you exactly what you have to put in it. In this scenery the only thing I’m telling you to do is make a scenery about summer, so the rest is up to you in terms of what to put in it.
You have 5 days to complete this so this is due Saturday, July 16, 2011. You will make a tinypic of this assignment. Thanks and if you have any questions or concerns, please message me! Thanks again!
